  1. Extraordnary! Is that book of travel (in South america) by Isherwood worth keeping? I am sorting and keep looking at it. I enjoyed 'Goodbye to Berlin' (found some of it quite moving). I read 'Time's Arrow' and want to read more of MA (and his father)...I have his biog. I was also just looking at Trilby. I knew (but was rusty) re du Maurier etc (my mother read a sequel to 'Rebecca' once and I got that for her to re-read. I didn't realise though that Trilby was the start of Svengali etc - I also was looking at the facsimile edition (1947). I see James was puzzled at its popularity: but there is an erotic / exotic component in Svengali - Trilby. Meanwhile an amazing work of madness so well laid out with interesting books and photographs...

  2. Thanks, Richard. Isherwood's travel book is not really in the front rank of his works, but all of them are interesting -- mostly the directly autobiographical ones, though, I think.
