Graham Greene records in his autobiography that the only autograph he collected as a boy was “when I ran, in my school cap after G. K. Chesterton, as he labored like a Lepanto galleon down Shaftsbury Avenue.” There's so much that's lovable about him, still, despite his awful lapses into anti-semitism and unconvincing Christian propaganda. See my post about him here.

It's taken me some time to warm to Dunsany. Lovecraft, of course, saw him as a genius on a par with Poe (particularly in his early stories). The immense range of his work almost guarantees a certain unevenness, but stories such as "Where the Tides Ebb and Flow" are indubitable masterpieces.

The zest of his early work was succeeded by some really quite brilliantly concise and innovative later novels. Boneland was a step too far, for me, but otherwise I feel there's much for all of us to learn from this master storyteller.

I guess most people read him now simply because of the association with C. S. Lewis, but there's certainly some great fairy stories and other works of fantasy there. For a while an American publisher was reissuing all his novels in rewritten form with the Scots taken out - I don't know if successfully or not.

A very interesting test case. Mayne was convicted of sexual offences against children in 2004, and his books were accordingly stripped from the shelves. Does this make him a 'non-person' - or, more to the point, a non-writer - from now on? When you consider the chorus of praise he'd hitherto received, it does seem to raise some vital issues about the nature of literary fame.
