Robert Aickman's first book, We Are for the Dark (1951), was written in collaboration with his then lover Elizabeth Jane Howard (subsequently Kingsley Amis's wife). Each of them supplied three of the six stories in the collection. Her contributions included the celebrated "Three Miles Up," one of the most haunting ghost stories of the twentieth century.

It wasn't until 1964 that he published another book, Dark Entries, which included his own most famous story, "Ringing the Changes." He put out another five collections during his lifetime (as well as leaving a number of stories which were published posthumously) - forty-eight (or 55) 'strange tales' in all, depending on how you count.

A strange figure: on the one hand, there's the rather camp clowning of the Lucia books; on the other hand, the grimness of so many of his 'spook stories'. A mystery to unfold, perhaps?

Some of her ghost stories are genuine classics. The West Country novels seem very likely to keep being read, too.

"The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.” -- This, the first line of The Go-Between, is certainly L. P. Hartley's most commonly quoted phrase (though apparently it was first used by his friend Lord David Cecil in his inaugural lecture as Goldsmith's Professor in 1949). He certainly has to be counted as one of the most distinguished ghost story writers of the twentieth century, alongside all his other achievements.

Trump-admiration aside, she is quite an interesting writer. The film (and, I presume, stage play) of 'The Woman in Black' is far more effective than the original book - and the same applies to The Small Hand - but her talent for ghost stories is impressive nevertheless.

Bram Stoker may have been a bit uneven as a writer, but Dracula remains a legitimate masterpiece, which has outlasted successive avalanches of sequels, continuations, dramatisations, and other adaptations. The Jewel of Seven Stars is also a very remarkable work, as are many of his short stories. Don't listen to anyone who sees all this as somehow accidental. I've written more about him here, as well as on Dracula in general here and here.

Reputedly the original for the villainous Mr. Karswell in M. R. James's ghost story "Casting the Runes" (1911). He may also have been the model for Father Hattrick in Edmund Crispin's 1977 detective novel The Glimpses of the Moon: "Under another name," says Crispin, "he's a sort of male C.V. Wedgwood."

One of the most bizarre and unexpected English ghost story writers. "Shortly before he died in Kensington, London, Wakefield's wife wrote August Derleth that her husband had destroyed his correspondence files, manuscripts and all photographs of himself" [Wikipedia].
