Faulkner in the Library of America
Library of America caps its six-volume William Faulkner edition with a volume gathering all the stories he collected in his lifetime: his monumental Collected Stories (1950); Knight’s Gambit (1949); and Big Woods (1955). This volume offers these three collections as carefully prepared by Faulkner, with new authoritative and corrected texts that best represent his intentions. Also here are the stories “The Hound” (included in his second story collection Doctor Martino but omitted from Collected Stories) and “Spotted Horses”; the fictionalized autobiographical essay “Mississippi”; Faulkner’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech; and explanatory notes by scholar Theresa M. Towner.
- Library of America: Forthcoming (Fall 2023)
In my previous post on William Faulkner, I concentrated on William Blotner's immensely detailed two-volume biography of the writer, which I'd just finished reading at the time.
Other points of interest for me then were the Folio Society's recent re-edition of The Sound and the Fury, with the disparate plot-lines picked out in different colours, as the author originally intended.
Both Blotner and his fellow editor Noel Polk died shortly after completing their monumental, five-volume, twenty-years-in-the-making Library of America edition of Faulkner's collected novels. There was a nagging gap left in their coverage, however: a volume of stories was definitely required to complete the canon of his fiction.
That task has now been undertaken by Professor Theresa M. Towner of the University of Texas at Dallas.
It is, in some ways, a simpler job than that of collating all the 'corrected' texts of the various novels, given her decision to include only the three canonical story collections.
In other ways, however, it points to the difficulty of tidying Faulkner's untidy, sprawling works into one definitive order. The Snopes trilogy, for instance, is largely made up of revised texts of originally separate short stories, and the same is true of many of the other novels (The Unvanquished, in particular).
It's for this reason that Joseph Blotner's Uncollected Stories will remain an indispensible part of Faulkner's bibliography, as it includes so much more information on the disparate texts of these novels-in-linked-stories.
Faulkner was immensely prolific when it came to writing (and publishing) short stories: the list below runs to 129 items, only 42 of which he chose to include in his Collected Stories (1950). If we add to those the six in Knight's Gambit (1949), the one uncollected story in Big Woods (1955), and the other three stories mentioned in the Library of America press release quoted above, it brings us to a total of 52.
We should add to that, though, the seven stories in The Unvanquished (1938), the two in Wild Palms (1939), and the seven in Go Down, Moses (1942), all included elsewhere in the Library of America edition. That swells our number to 68.
Any Faulkner completist will probably already have a copy of the 17 early stories included in New Orleans Sketches (1958), and the 45 stories - some of them texts of stories revised for later novels - in Uncollected Stories (1979) account for most of the remainder.
I can still see twelve stories in the list below which don't yet seem to have been reprinted in any easily available form, but they don't sound as if they constitute too great a loss: even Homer nods, let alone William Faulkner.
