Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925)
Will there never come a seasonEver since I first read King Solomon's Mines as a boy, I've been rather keen on the adventure stories of Rider Haggard. There were certainly some unpalatable elements in them: for instance, the propensity of his characters to shoot large numbers of animals for 'sport,' even when in the midst of some perilous quest.
Which shall rid us from the curse
Of a prose which knows no reason
And an unmelodious verse:
...
When there stands a muzzled stripling,
Mute, beside a muzzled bore:
When the Rudyards cease from kipling
And the Haggards ride no more.James Kennedy Stephen, "Lapsus Calami [A slip of the pen]"
They're certainly boys' books, too. It's not that there aren't female characters in them, it's just that their role is generally either to fall in love with one or other of the heroes, or to rule over some mysterious tribe in the heart of Africa, or - in the case of She - both.
Certainly the fact that my father had so many of them, and his preference for the wonderfully colourful Macdonald illustrated editions of all the major ones, had something to do with it, too.
In any case, right or wrong, forward-thinking or recidivist, I do like the look and the feel of these books. I've tried to compile a list, below, of all the volumes in the series I can find mention of online, together with (in bold) the ones which I myself own.
Not all of the covers are by Hookway Cowles, but his are definitely the most spirited. I'd never read them in any other form if I had the chance of picking up one of these:
