John Brand: Popular Antiquities of Great Britain. Ed. Sir Henry Ellis (1777 / 1853)

John Brand (1744-1806)

Sir Henry Ellis (1777-1869)

Brand's Popular Antiquities (1853)
[purchased Edinburgh 1987]:

John Brand. Observations on the Popular Antiquities of Great Britain, chiefly illustrating the Origin of Our Vulgar and Provincial Customs, Ceremonies and Superstitions. 1777. Arranged, revised & greatly enlarged by Sir Henry Ellis. 1813. 3 vols. 1841. London: Henry G. Bohn, 1853.

Brand's Popular Antiquities (1853)

Bohn's Libraries

They're rather ugly, dusty-looking books, for the most part, with their drab grey covers - but Bohn's various libraries of popular and scholarly books were one of the major sources of reliable texts of modern and classical authors in the mid to late 19th century.

One case in point is this mad-looking compendium of British folkloric information, first published by antiquarian John Brand in 1777, and enlarged subsequently by Sir Henry Ellis and others until it reached its present massive size.

Is it "commodious to read in"? Not particularly, no - but I can guarantee that it contains interesting details on all sorts of subjects which fall only vaguely under the auspices of the original compilation.

Folklore was not yet a science when this was written - and it shows. James Frazer and Max Müller would have laughed at its lack of system and method. But then, their carefully arranged tomes sound like moonshine and madness to contemporary scholars in the field. One man's science is another man's superstition.
