It was rather strange when two competing Capote movies appeared at virtually the same time, in 2005-6. Since then, the brouhaha has somewhat quietened. Much of his work seems likely to endure, however.

For a long time he was regarded as the standard example of what not to do when you were writing a short story: trick endings, sentimentality, etc. Now, however, I can't help feeling that he's making a bit of a come-back as a classic American turn-of-the-century realist. His work remains entertaining and evocative.

"Living in a state of considerable wealth and privilege, she was given to rather conventional limousine-liberal political and ideological convictions and occasionally to oracular pronouncements thereof," as critic Jonathan Yardley commented in 2009. There's some truth in that. But her work remains readable, if more tendentious than she may have realised. She's best when she sticks to telling stories well - the historian's skill she herself said she valued most highly.
