I didn't really much like Scorsese's film of Silence, but I do like Endo's writing generally - especially the novel The Girl I Left Behind, which I actually read in French (La fille que j'ai abandonnée) because it was lent to me by a girl from New Caledonia sometime in the late 1990s.

A great favourite of lovers of fin-de-siècle decadence, such as H. P. Lovecraft and his circle, Irish-Greek-American writer Lafcadio Hearn turns out still to be surprisingly popular in his adopted country, Japan.

Yasunari Kawabata is, I suppose, the epitome of most people's idea of a classic Japanese novelist: concise, spare, weighty, and intensely conscious of the aesthetic effect of every word he writes. He's a lot more interesting than that clichéd reading would suggest, however.

Like him or loathe him, his work is difficult to ignore. A great deal was made of how 'unrepresentative' he was of contemporary Japanese culture after his dramatic suicide, but I'm not so sure, having read so much more about the pre-war era since then.

Ever since I first read The Makioka Sisters, Tanizaki has been my favourite among modern Japanese novelists. Not only this, but his more perverse works, such as The Secret History of the Lord of Musashi, also hold a strong appeal. I suppose, in essence, it's the fact that he has a 'modern' and a 'traditional' self - which he himself associated with his early residence in Tokyo, then, later on, Kyoto - both of which continue to manifest in his fiction throughout his career.
