"Told in the Drooling Ward" and "The Apostate" had a huge effect on me when I first read them as a teenager. He's actually a very fine writer, though undoubtedly a bit slapdash and mechanical in his later work. A great many of his books are also available online here.

One can understand how many of Janet Malcolm's victims must have felt extremely bitter about the experience, but there's no denying that she could write a very entertaining essay. It remains to be seen how well her work ages now that she's gone.

For a long time he was regarded as the standard example of what not to do when you were writing a short story: trick endings, sentimentality, etc. Now, however, I can't help feeling that he's making a bit of a come-back as a classic American turn-of-the-century realist. His work remains entertaining and evocative.

"Living in a state of considerable wealth and privilege, she was given to rather conventional limousine-liberal political and ideological convictions and occasionally to oracular pronouncements thereof," as critic Jonathan Yardley commented in 2009. There's some truth in that. But her work remains readable, if more tendentious than she may have realised. She's best when she sticks to telling stories well - the historian's skill she herself said she valued most highly.
