    • pp.206-7: "One of my visits to Dr. Jessopp [c.1896] included an afternoon of great interest to me. He took me to Norwich and introduced me to the late Professor Knapp, who was then living in the city and working at his life of George Borrow. Being a devotee of that author, I was glad to sit for three or four hours and have a flood of information poured over me. It was punctuated in a curious way: every few minutes Professor Knapp's enthusiasm over'came him and he gave vent to two or three sobs: 'O, he was a good man!' he would say, and then dry his eyes, and go on. He had got together the most surprising collection of documents about Borrow - proof-sheets of Lavengro (then called Life), coach-bills of coaches by which Borrow had travelled from Norwich to London, above all the household account-bills which Borrow had kept for his mother (who could not write) at a time when Borrow rather wished it to be understood (in after years) that he had been roaming over the interior of Asia. He had penetrated, too, most of the masks under which Borrow conceals the identities of the people he meets: some of these he said he could not divulge to the public: probably all have leaked out by this time." • pp.239-40: "Combination Room followed Hall, where it was important to see that certain members of the party did not get hold of the snuff-box (if they did, conversation was rendered impossible by the crashing sneezes which occurred every five seconds); where also Dr. Walter Fletcher, coming from Trinity, was apt to produce some horrid contrivance (reminding one of the book ' called 'A Hundred Ways of Making Uncle Jump') to the terror and confusion of staid, white-haired men. And then, perhaps, a game of cards: then possibly an adjournment of a few of the company, and a ghost story composed at fever heat, but not always able to ward off sleep from some listener's eye (this rankles a little still): and so to bed with what appetites we might." 1. A very impressive collection! But why no Harry Price? I do believe if you keep up the collecting your library will compliment his famous legacy of collected books.

  2. No Harry Price simply through lack of luck in finding copies of his books, I'm afraid. He's a bit too collectible (i.e. expensive) to come up very often in the kinds of shops I frequent.

I'm afraid you compliment my scruffy collection of reprints and paperbacks too highly. I've seen pictures of his books, marshalled in long rows with distinctive bindings. Something to aspire to one day, perhaps ...
