'How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!' When you consider the genius of his early work, and compare it to the lacklustre running-on-empty tone of his later maunderings (with the odd flash of the old fire in such stories as 'The Parrot Who Met Papa") all you can conclude is what a fall from grace was this.

At his best, in the Prince in Waiting trilogy, or such 'adult' novels as The Long Voyage, he was very, very good. He was, in fact, in many ways more of a visionary than his more famous contemporary John Wyndham, with whom he was often compared.

Edited & Introduced:
I can't help liking old Arthur, the (so-called ) 'Colossus of Science Fiction; his stories still read surprisingly well after all these years. According to the terms of the 'Clarke-Asimov treaty', he was to be described as the 'second-best science writer' while Asimov was to be the 'second-best SF writer'. That has a certain ring of truth to it, I must admit. See my post about him here.

There's no denying that much of his work is brilliant - and that he's had a transformative role in SF - but I'm not sure that any of his books would be the first I'd reach for to take to a desert island ...

Though I still feel somewhat repelled by the attitudes expressed in his later books, there's no denying the sheer readability of Heinlein's early work. It's no wonder that he stood out so amongst all the journeyman hacks of the Golden Age of pulp SF. See my post about him here.

Ever since I first read Dune in the mid-1970s, while I was still at High School, I've loved Frank Herbert's majestic vision and skill at world-making. He has his faults, certainly - undue prolixity, a tendency to quote from earlier characters as if they were immortal sages - but these are greatly outweighed by the originality of his ideas. It's a shame that his legacy has been somewhat overshadowed by a seemingly endless series of greatly inferior sequels and prequels to the Dune Series composed by his son Brian in collaboration with Kevin J. Anderson.

I've always had rather a soft spot for Fred Hoyle's Science Fiction novels, ever since I first read The Black Cloud as a teenager. The ones written in collaboration with his son aren't nearly as good, but some of them are pretty readable even so.

Ever since I first picked up a scruffy secondhand paperback copy in a local bookshop, I've been entranced by A Canticle for Leibowitz. Some of his short stories - 'Crucifixus Etiam,' 'Izzard and the Membrane' - are almost equally impressive, though. A great writer, fullstop.

Edited:
My PhD supervisor, Colin Manlove, an authority on Fantasy and SF writing generally, told me that Robert Silverberg was his favourite writer in the genre, calling him 'the perfect Science Fiction machine.' Of course, that was back in the 1980s, just after he'd reinvented himself with Lord Valentine's Castle, most of whose sequels were still to come. He's certainly a prodigy, and - vast though his output is - not a lot of it is negligible.
